How to choose the right class when you're just starting out

by

Thomas

Looking at a modern studio timetable can feel like trying to read another language. Between HIIT, MetCon, Reformer Pilates, and functional strength, it is completely normal to feel paralyzed by choice. When you are just starting out, the sheer volume of options often leads to either booking a class that is entirely wrong for your goals or, worse, not booking anything at all. But finding the right fit doesn't have to be a guessing game. Here is a simple, foolproof framework to help you navigate the schedule and find the class that will actually keep you coming back.

Identify Your Primary "Why" Before you look at the schedule, figure out what you actually want your body to do. If your goal is to build muscle, improve your posture, and get physically stronger, you should gravitate towards strength or foundational lifting classes where the focus is on controlled movements and moving weight. If you want to improve your cardiovascular engine, sweat out a long day, and get a massive endorphin rush, a HIIT or conditioning class is your best bet. If you are dealing with a highly stressful job and your body feels tight and achy, jumping into a high-intensity class might just add more stress to your system. In that case, mobility, yoga, or Pilates will help you build core strength while actually lowering your cortisol levels.

Seek Out the "Foundations" Once you know what you want to achieve, be honest about your current fitness level. There is zero shame in being a beginner—every single person in the studio started exactly where you are. Look for classes labeled "fundamentals," "foundations," "intro," or "beginner." These sessions are specifically designed to teach you the proper form, mechanics, and terminology at a manageable pace, ensuring you don't feel left behind or risk injury. Even if you consider yourself fairly fit from running or playing sports, taking a foundational class when trying a completely new discipline is always the smartest move.

Consider Your Schedule and Energy Levels The best workout plan is the one you can actually stick to. If you are not a morning person, don't force yourself to book a 6:00 AM bootcamp; you will likely hit snooze and wake up feeling guilty. Similarly, if your energy crashes at 6:00 PM, an intense evening session might be a struggle. Choose a class time that naturally aligns with your daily energy peaks so that getting through the studio doors feels less like a chore and more like a reward.

Commit to the "Rule of Three" You will rarely fall in love with a completely new class on the very first try. The first session is always going to feel a bit awkward as you figure out where the equipment is, how the instructor cues movements, and what the pacing feels like. By the second class, you know what to expect. By the third class, the anxiety of the unknown disappears, and you can actually focus on the workout itself. Give a new format three genuine tries before you decide it isn't for you.

Ultimately, the "best" class isn't the one that burns the most calories or uses the heaviest weights; it is the one you genuinely enjoy, feel supported in, and can commit to consistently.
